Do you know what retablos are? Retablos are a sophisticated folk art in the form of portable boxes filled with brightly colored, intricate narrative scenes that depict religious, historical, or everyday events.

Come and learn about the creative process of Peruvian-American retablo maker Nicario Jimenez. Jimenez’s hands move quickly and with confidence to fashion people, animals, and mythical figurines as he creates poignant scenes from a doughy mixture of boiled potato and gypsum powder.

Discover his work and see the artist in action as he demonstrates various techniques.

Presented in Spanish with English translation.
