The SS United States being towed south past the Boynton Inlet on Feb. 26, 2025. The retired oceanliner — the fatest ship to cross the Atlantic — is being delivered to Mobile, Alabama to be prepared as the world's largest artificial reef. The ship's maiden voyage was in 1952. After several owners, she was towed to Philadelphia in 1996, where she remained until February. She has been purchased by Okalussa County, Florida with plans to sink her by 2026 near Destin.
Freddy Binner, of Lake Worth Beach — and a fan of old cruise ships — showed up at the Boynton Inlet in a borrowed uniform and carrying a book devoted to the history of the SS United States.
