FAU Department of Music Presents Concert of Works from the Richard Beattie Davis Collection

 

Florida Atlantic University’s department of music in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents “Gems from the Davis Collection,” a concert including works in the Richard Beattie Davis collection that is housed at FAU. The concert is on Saturday, February 18 at 3 p.m. in the University Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Admission is free, with a suggested $10 donation.

The concert program includes the American premiere of Adolph von Henselt’s “Ave Maria” for piano and cello; a piano quintet by Sargey Taneyev and music by  Nikolai Medtner, Aleksandr Nikolayevich Scriabin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Paul Juon and Pyotr IlyichTchaikovsky.

The concert will be performed by Leonid Treer, piano; Sandra McClain, soprano; the Delray String Quartet: Mei Mei Luo and Tomas Cotik, violins; Richard Fleischman, viola; and Claudio Jaffe, cello.

There also will be an exhibition of the Davis Collection from Tuesday, February 7 through Friday, April 6, in the S.E.Wimberly Library on FAU’s Boca Raton campus.  The collection consists of first and early editions of a wide variety of music, dating from the early 1790s to the first two decades of the 20th century. There are full scores of first German editions of the nine symphonies of Beethoven and several other of his orchestral works, a miscellaneous collection of 19th century editions of choral, orchestral and piano music, and more than 60 piano works of J. N. Hummel. There are also more than 200 Russian scores, almost all first editions dating from the mid-19th century to the years immediately preceding the Russian Revolution. There are more than 60 chamber works by a variety of composers, complete with parts, available for use. 

FAU’s concerts are supported in part by the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, Palm Beach County and the Tourist Development Council.
