“Waves of Blue” Concert Celebrates Inauguration of FAU President Mary Jane Saunders Concert to Benefit the “President’s Scholarship Challenge” In celebration of the inauguration of Florida Atlantic University’s sixth president, Mary Jane Saunders, FAU’s department of music and several other guest artists will present the “Waves of Blue” concert on Sunday, October 24, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. General admission tickets are $25; faculty, staff and Lifelong Learning Society student tickets are $15; and degree seeking students may obtain tickets for free. Group prices are also available. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.fauevents.com or by calling 1-800-564-9539. The concert will begin FAU’s inaugural festivities, and proceeds from the event will benefit the Presidents Scholarship Challenge Fund. The program opens with a performance of the National Anthem and other selected choral numbers presented by FAU’s Chamber Singers, under the direction of Patricia Fleitas. This will be followed by ethnic jazz melodies performed by the international award-winning Klezmer Company Orchestra, a professional ensemble-in-residence at FAU’s Libraries directed by Aaron Kula. Heather Coltman, chair of FAU’s department of music and a world-renowned concert pianist, along with FAU’s Wind Ensemble, will then present George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Following a short intermission, the opera duo Duelling Divas will then perform their comedic look at the world of opera, followed by FAU’s Uwwallo Messengers jazz group, under the direction of Tim Walters. Judith Burganger and Leonid Treer will then perform two popular duets on the piano by Brahms. The concert will be concluded with “Red Cape Tango,” performed by FAU’s Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Prescott. Recognizing the challenges our students face in furthering their education, Saunders and members of the FAU Foundation Board of Directors established a matching gift fund called the “President's Scholarship Challenge.” This fund was launched with a personal gift of $50,000 from Saunders and will benefit student scholarships. Contributions through an annual gift designated to student scholarships at FAU will be matched dollar for dollar through this program.
