Seminole War specialist and author Richard Procyk will be guest speaker for the Lighthouse History Lecture Series on May 14, at 10:30 am. “Unearthing the Truth About the Seminole Wars: Loxahatchee’s Lost Battlefields” will be presented under the Seminole Chickee at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, 500 Captain Armour’s Way, Jupiter. The Lecture Series is part of the educational programming offered by the Loxahatchee River Historical Society.

Procyk’s education in history, anthropology, criminology and forensic science gave him the perfect background for archaeological and historical investigation and preservation. His passion led him to work in the field with professional archaeologists on prehistoric sites. A retired detective lieutenant from the Miami Beach Police Department, Procyk spent 20 years searching for the Battle of Loxahatchee site and Major William Lauderdale’s Tennessee Volunteer encampment. His keen instincts and his research led him to believe they were located in West Jupiter. His book, Guns Across the Loxahatchee, chronicles not only the journey of the Seminole people but also his detective work and painstaking search for the two historic sites, and the truth about their real location. In his lecture, Procyk will reflect on his search, the Seminole people and the Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park.

Procyk has served as member and Board member of some very prominent historical groups such as the Archaeological Society of the Miami Museum of Science, Florida Historical Society, the Seminole Wars Historic Foundation and the Southeast Florida Archaeological Society. He has served on the Board of Directors and the advisory board of the Loxahatchee River Historical Society, as a Board member of the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy, Inc., Miami Institute of Maya Studies, the Palm Beach County Historic Resources Review Board and the Town of Jupiter’s History Web Site Committee. His associations and work with these groups has spanned nearly half a century. Expertise in the field led Procyk to lecture at museums, schools and universities and teach Florida history for three years at Palm Beach State College, specializing in the Seminole Wars.

The Lecture Series is free to Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum Members and $10 for non-members.  Seating is limited.  Please call (561) 747-8380 x101 to RSVP. Visit our web site at www.jupiterlighthouse.org for future lectures, additional programs or how to become a member.
