For theater-goers who may need a break after preparing their taxes, The Delray Beach Playhouse is offering welcome comic relief in the form of Neil Simons smash-hit comedy, THE PRISONER OF SECOND AVENUE.
This timely comedy tells the story of Mel Edison, an account executive in New York who suddenly finds himself out-of-work in a struggling economy. Mels wife, Edna, takes a job in order to tide them over; but the strain of being out of work soon pushes Mel to the breaking point. His apartment suddenly becomes a hostile environment. Alternately without water, electricity, Mel finds himself besieged by barking dogs, belligerent neighbors and a wildly fluctuating thermostat. Even his psychiatrist dies! And just when he thinks that things cannot get worse, his family visits!
Thanks to the comic genius of Neil Simon, we laugh out loud as air pollution kills Mels cactus plants, carousing German airline stewardesses keep him awake at night, and New Yorks Police Commissioner is kidnapped; and we identify with Mel and Edna as they struggle heroically to remain sane in an unstable world.
The cast includes MARK HETELSON and PAT CASALE as Mel and Edna. NORMAN STEINTHAL plays Mels successful older brother, Harry; while CINDY GABER, CONNIE LANDY and LESLIE ROSENBURG appear as Mels doting sisters.
After almost 40 years, THE PRISONER OF SECOND AVENUE remains a warm-hearted comic masterpiece, brimming with wit and good humor, by the author of THE ODD COUPLE, COME BLOW YOUR HORN and THE SUNSHINE BOYS.
THE PRISONER OF SECOND AVENUE plays from March 26 through April 11with matinees at 2:00 PM and evening performances at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $25 (Students: Half-Price). For reservations, call (561) 272-1281 Ext. 4.
