THE OUTRAGEOUS SOPHIE TUCKER
Florida Premiere
Directed by: William Gazecki
2014; USA; 96 minutes.
Nicknamed "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas," singer Sophie Tucker defied expectations. Born to an Orthodox Jewish Family, she was not conventionally beautiful, but catapulted to stardom with her blues-inflected songs, sexual innuendo, infectious charisma and irreverent humor. Spanning a career that oversaw the decline of vaudeville, the invention of talking pictures and the birth of television, Tucker redefined show business and had some unforgettable signature tunes (such as "Some of These Days" and "My Yiddishe Mama").
