Event Description

FAU Lecture Addresses “The Obama Administration and the Arab Spring”

The Asian Studies Certificate Program and the International Studies Program in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present the lecture “The Obama Administration and the Arab Spring” with Juan Cole on Wednesday, February 29 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Social Sciences Building, room 250, on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Juan Cole is the Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan. For three decades, Cole has sought to put the relationship of the West and the Muslim world in historical context. His most recent book is Engaging the Muslim World (Palgrave Macmillan, March, 2009) and he also recently authored Napoleon’s Egypt: Invading the Middle East (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007). Cole has written widely about Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and South Asia. He has also commented extensively on al-Qaeda and the Taliban, the Iraq War, the politics of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and Iranian domestic struggles and foreign affairs. Cole has been a regular guest for numerous national media outlets (e.g, PBS, CNN, ABC, MSNBC)  and he continues to study and write about contemporary Islamic movements, whether mainstream or radical, whether Sunni and Salafi or Shi`ite. He lived in various parts of the Muslim world for nearly 10 years, and continues to travel widely there.

For further information about the lecture, email ehanne@fau.edu. For directions and information on parking, stop at the information booth at the main Glades Road entrance to FAU.
