Social Commentary through Art

The Fine Art of Craft and Revolution

Opening Friday March 4, 6 PM to 9 PM

On Friday evening, March 4 from 6-10 P.M. Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery artists add their social commentary to that of folks from around the world working for social justice and environmental sanity.  One of the few galleries in Palm Beach County devoted entirely to three dimensional works; CGMS takes the opportunity to showcase an extraordinary quality of work equal to the message.  In a week that features the superior work of craft artists from around the country at the convention center, Clay Glass Metal Stone artists are permanent extensions of this quality in Lake Worth, Palm Beach County.

It is the job of the artist to stir the pot of controversy.  As the world erupted in a struggle for freedom, artists have traditionally covered walls with murals, created the posters of the movements and inspired their compatriots with works that convey the thoughts and controversies of the moment.

Palm Beach Gardens Artist Lois Herrick works with a frenetic energy creating sculptures of clay in numbers so great one might think a support studio was in assistance.  Her fertile mind cranks out issue after issue which she illustrates with a decided ironic twist.  Legally blind since seventeen, Lois uses bold colors and exaggerated details heightened by her other senses.  She outlines the stories she attributes to her work with lengthy titles, but invites the public to add their own interpretations.

Loxahatchee artist and zoologist, Karen McGovern uses her works to support the environmental causes she champions both personally and worldwide.  Included in her eclectic and intricate jewelry are beetles, butterflies and beads.  Unusual antique elements intertwine with hand-forged metals make for one-of-a-kind creations that enhance and adorn every wearer.  All proceeds from her work go to support a thirty acre wildlife preserve in Loxahatchee.  There, rare and endangered species are preserved, bred and returned to the wild.

Lake Worth artist Linda Manganaro creates three dimensional collages from unusual antique pieces and parts from bottle caps, zippers, erector sets to buttons and more.  Combinations of words and the juxtaposition of unlikely or oxymoronic images make social commentary that is hard to ignore.  Victorian design themes collide with neo-modern extremist art, pushing content into forms creating some of the most avant-garde work being done within the local arts scene.

A wine and cheese tasting takes place at every opening.  Clay§Glass§Metal§Stone Cooperative Gallery is sponsored by the Flamingo Clay Studio, a non-profit arts organization whose mission is to provide affordable studio and gallery space for three-dimensional artists.  The gallery is located at 605 Lake Avenue in downtown Lake Worth.    Gallery openings are the first and third Friday of each month from 6-9PM.  For information call 215-205-9441.
