Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Robert Cottingham (American, born inBrooklyn 1935- ), the great photorealist painter of America’s signs andbuilding facades, would return to the image of the star – in billboardmarquees and electrified commercial signs.  Using letter forms, wordsand parts of words in his paintings, his images underline the artist’sfascination with everyday commonplace objects which evoke an essence ofthe American spirit. This exhibition debuts a series of 20 iconic Starsilkscreens on canvas by Cottingham, based on color variations of one ofhis most recognizable images.

Cottingham established himself inthe early 1970s as one of the first generation photorealists with suchrenowned artists as Richard Estes and Chuck Close. Abstraction andrealism are skillfully wedded in Cottingham’s shimmering paintingsdepicting the vanishing objects and icons of American culture, such ascommercial neon signs, which were the inspiration behind Cottingham’sstar paintings and prints. Cottingham worked on this three-year projectwith master printer Gary Lichtenstein and Michael McKenzie of AmericanImage Atelier in New York, to produce this new series of monumental Starpaintings silkscreened onto canvas.

This exhibition isorganized in conjunction with Rosenbaum Contemporary Gallery, GalleryCenter, Boca Raton.
