The Delray Beach Public Library Celebrates Memorial Day

The Delray Beach Public Library, 100 West Atlantic Avenue, is pleased to present a Memorial Day Tribute on Wednesday, May 25 @ 2:00 p.m. featuring retired Air Force Brigadier General and Korean War Veteran Simeon Kobrinetz. General Kobrinetz has served as a past National Chaplain of the Department of Veterans Affairs Chaplaincy Service which began in March 1865.

General Kobrinetz will discuss the role of the veteran in society today and in the past, his own experiences serving his country both as a veteran and an advocate for veteran’s affairs, the history of Arlington Cemetery and much more. A Question and Answer session will follow.

Unfortunately, when most Americans think of Memorial Day, the first images that come to mind are of store-wide sales and a day off from work!  The Delray Beach Public Library hopes to change this by offering an educational program for the community that focuses on the meaning of Memorial Day and honors those military personnel in our communities who have bravely served. We invite all veterans and their families to attend this important program. The Library would like to acknowledge Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4141, now located at 208 South Federal Highway, for their involvement and support of this project.

To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution passed on December 2000, asks that at 3:00 pm local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way, a Moment of Remembrance and Respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps’.”

This program is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend this special event, in uniform if you like, to honor all veterans that have proudly served their country and to remember those soldiers currently serving. For further information call the Library at 561-266-9490.
