To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and to promote awareness and education, a recycling container-painting contest will be held among teams of north county area students and chosen local artists at Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC). All three artist teams will be given an honorarium, and the winning group will receive a two-night stay for two at a green resort in Key West provided by Clear Channel Radio. The student winners will receive a cash prize for their school donated by Southern Waste Systems (SWS).SWS will provide six industrial-sized recycling containers on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22 at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. Competing artists and students will use the painting supplies contributed by Sherwin Williams and The Home Depot to paint an ocean- related theme on all sides of their recycling container. The paintings must include the LMC logo and a loggerhead turtle somewhere on the “canvas.” The contest will begin at noon on Earth Day and the participants will have from sunrise to sunset on Friday, and sunrise until noon on Saturday to complete their project. The work in progress and finished artwork will be viewable by the public at Loggerhead Park, where a panel of judges will choose a winner from both the student and artist categories on Saturday, April 24 at approximately 1 p.m. Simultaneously, Gater 98.7 FM will be holding their beach cleanup, after which, volunteers will use one of the SWS-decorated containers to discard trash from the cleanup effort. Community members will also be able to drop off recyclable cardboard to fill the containers until April 29. The proceeds from the cardboard will benefit the Loggerhead Marinelife Center. The recycling containers will then be dispersed for use throughout Palm Beach County.Recycle and celebrate the environmentally inspired transformed works of art with Earth Day event partners Clear Channel Radio, SWS, The Home Depot, Sherwin Williams of Jupiter, and Venue Marketing Group.
