Forget about Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day. Lantana has Lantana Lou.

Carrying a big fish and swearing a crown, Lantana Lou (aka former Lantana Vice Mayor Lou Canter) will emerge from the sea at Lantana's beach early on the morning of Feb. 2 to predict whether more months of beautiful weather are to come.

"Depending on the shadow from his belly, he'll make a prediction," Mayor Dave Stewart says.

This event, now in its ninth year, is the brainchild of Town Manager Mike Bornstein and Lou Canter, who has played Lantana Lou every year except for one, When columnist Frank Cerebino filled in because Canter was recovering from a health problem.

The crowd gathers at the Dune Deck cafe for coffee and sweet rolls at 7 a.m. Bagpipers and a haiku poetry contest are part of the fun.

Come see us chuck the wood chuck with the Lantana Trebuchet!
