The common trope is that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is ant-religion, specifically anti evangelical religion. Indeed, the ACLU has sued numerous times in support of the first clause of the First Amendment which forbids a state religion (the Establishment Clause). However, what too many are unaware the ACLU has been equally attentive to the second clause of the First Amendment, the Free Exercise Clause, which protects individuals from government interference in the practice of their faith.
