Florida Atlantic University will hold a conference titled “Haiti and the Americas” from Thursday, Oct. 21, through Saturday, Oct. 23. The conference will bring together scholars working on aspects of Haiti’s influence on the hemisphere, both historically and today. Session topics will focus on the many ways Haiti has been represented by outsiders, as well as the ways Haitians represent themselves, to think about the past, present and future of Haiti's place in the imagination of the Americas. The first two days of the conference will be held in the Senate Chambers on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road, and Saturday’s sessions will be held at the Wyndham Hotel in Boca Raton. All sessions are free and open to the public.
In addition to academic panels featuring presentations by leading scholars, the filmmaker, Michelange Quay, will be a special guest, presenting his film Eat, For This Is My Body on Thursday at 6 p.m. in FAU's Senate Chambers. Quay has been featured in the Lincoln Center/Museum of Modern Art new directors series, and his films have appeared at many international film festivals including Sundance. A literary evening will be held in the Ritter Art Gallery on Friday at 6 p.m., featuring creative writers Andrea Shaw, Guggenheim-winner Rose Rejouis and Commonwealth prize finalist Myriam J.A. Chancy. (Eat, For This is My Body will also be shown on Wednesday, October 20 at 7 p.m. at Toussaint L’Ouverture High School in Boynton Beach, information at ccarlage@fau.edu).
