Co-Curator of FAU’s ‘Figured Spaces’ Exhibition to Present Gallery Talk

The University Galleries at Florida Atlantic University will present a gallery talk by Karen Leader, assistant professor of art history and co-curator of the exhibition “Figured Spaces: Selections from the John Morrissey Collection,” on Thursday, January 26th  at 7 p.m., in the Schmidt Center Gallery, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The exhibition, which will be on view through Saturday, February 11, features figurative works by 12 women contemporary artists who are receiving favorable critical attention and experiencing success in the art world.

Leader will discuss works by artists featured in the exhibition and will also give insights into the process she and her co-curator,  Rod Faulds, director of the gallery, used to  select and install the works to create a unique viewing experience, while also honoring the mission of the University Galleries as an educational environment. Considering issues of gender, race, sexuality, and eroticism, the talk will complement the symposium “Taking the Space: Gender and the Figure in Contemporary Art” that will take place on Friday, February 3 in the Schmidt Gallery.

Leader received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU. She specializes in 19th- and 20th-century art and popular culture, and feminist theory. Her recent project is the film “Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU,” a collaboration with the Jaffe Center for Book Arts, to  premiere in spring 2012.

The University Galleries are open Tuesdays through Fridays, 1 to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. Group and class tours are welcome and can be arranged by appointment during public and alternative hours. The exhibition will be closed for the winter semester break through January 3, 2012.

“Figured Spaces: Selections from the John Morrissey Collection” is presented in association with the department of visual arts and art history, and has been made possible in part by John Morrissey. University Galleries exhibition and education programs are supported by the Palm Beach County Cultural Council; R.A. Ritter Foundation; Beatrice Cummings Mayer; the Sun-Sentinel Children’s Fund; a fund of the McCormick Foundation; BankAtlantic Foundation; and individual contributors.
