Despite a well-deserved reputation as an artist of deep Roman Catholic faith, many of Michelangelo’s most celebrated paintings and sculptures depict prominent figures from the Hebrew Bible. Examining three of the artist’s most famous works, the Sistine Ceiling, David, and Moses, this talk with Emily Fenichel, Ph.D. analyzes what these images reveal about Renaissance Judaism, as well as Michelangelo’s understanding of the Jewish people and their contributions to religion, art, and civic life during the early 16th century.
