FAU Presents a French Film Festival
Florida Atlantic University’s department of languages, linguistics and comparative literature presents a French film festival on Wednesday nights, beginning March 16 through April 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Performing Arts Building, room 101, Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. Admission is free.
All films presented are in French with English subtitles and will be introduced by FAU faculty. Films include “Persepolis,” “Welcome,” “Entrée Les Murs,” “The Silence of Lorna,” and “Azur et Asmar.”
- “Persepolis,” by Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi, is the story of a young girl coming of age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Through the eyes of this nine year old, the movie portrays how the hopes of a people are dashed as fundamentalists take power.
- “Welcome,” by Phillippe Lioret, takes a look at the perils faced by illegal immigrants. A 17-year-old Iraqi Kurd is stuck in Calais, France. Desperate to join his girlfriend in London, Bilal vows to swim across the English Channel if he has to.
- “Entre Le Murs,” by Laurent Cantet, follows a class at a diverse Parisian public junior high school.
- “Le Silence de Lorna,” by Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne, tells the story of Lorna, an Albanian immigrant who lives with a heroin addict named Claudy. They have a sham marriage, and Lorna plots to take her husband’s life.
- “Azur et Asmar,” by Michel Ocelot, is an animated feature about two boys, one white and blue-eyed, and the other dark-skinned. The film addresses racism, intolerance and superstition.
