FAU’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Hosts Forum on Women’s Health Issues BOCA RATON, FL – Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will host their second annual Women’s Leadership Forum. This year’s forum is titled “Issues in Women’s Health: Research, Public Health Policy and Advocacy.” It will take place on Friday, March 26, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Eleanor R. Baldwin House on NW 20th Street of FAU’s Boca Raton campus. Admission for the public is $40, and $20 for FAU faculty and staff. Registration information can be found at www.fau.edu/womensstudies. “The theme of this year’s women’s leadership forum is especially timely in view of current efforts to reform the U.S healthcare system,” said Josephine Beoku-Betts, director of FAU’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. “Healthcare issues are of great concern to women now because they are more likely to be among the economically disadvantaged and therefore disproportionately represented among the uninsured and underinsured. The forum will address inequalities affecting women’s healthcare and current trends in research and policy development, as well as advocacy and grassroots activist approaches to promote public dialogue and legislation to address these concerns.” The keynote speaker for the event is Elizabeth Thompson, senior vice president for medical and scientific affairs at Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Thompson’s lecture is titled “Research with Impact: Changing Outcomes for Women Around the Globe.” The morning panel is titled Showcasing FAU Research. Speakers include Robin Fiore, the Adelaide J. Snyder Professor of Ethics, with “Justice, Women and Healthcare;” Kathy Schmilling, a radiologist at Boca Raton Community Hospital, with “The Hamam Project: Improving Breast Cancer Detection, Diagnosis and Treatment;” Patricia Liehr, associate dean of research in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, with “Lessons from Women who Survived Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor;” and Maria Fadiman, assistant professor in the FAU department of geo-physical sciences, with “Natural Resource Use: Effects on the Environment and Women in the Philippines.” The second panel is titled Public Health Policy and Legislation. Speakers include Michelle McGovern, regional director for the Office of Senator Bill Nelson, with “Update on Federal Legislation regarding Women and Healthcare;” Judith Selzer, vice president of public relations for Planned Parenthood of Palm Beach County, with “Body Politics: Public Policy and Reproductive Health Care in Florida;” and Paula Thaqi, director of the Broward County Public Health Department, with “The Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.” The afternoon panel is titled Advocacy and Activism and will include Gauri Agarwal, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Miami, with “The Hysteria over Women’s Health: Teaching Medical Students to Advocate for Women’s Health;” Lucille Guzman, director of the Breast Care Education Program at the Caridad Center in Boynton Beach, with “Women’s Healthcare Services for the Uninsured at Caridad Center;” and Jennifer Rey from Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse with “Incorporating Domestic Violence Survivors Safety in Healthcare Practices.” In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies launched the Women’s Leadership Forum in 2009 to promote understanding among students, faculty, and the wider community about issues of critical concern to women in our society and globally.
