FAU Galleries Presents “Gaze to Discover”: Master Thesis Exhibition of Tabitha Pennekamp

Florida Atlantic University announces the opening reception of “Gaze to Discover,” featuring the ceramic works of Master of Fine Arts student Tabitha Pennekamp. The opening is on Friday, March 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ritter Art Gallery on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.  The exhibition will run through Saturday, April 7, 2012.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m.  Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

“Gaze to Discover” is a play on words. Pennekamp’s work invites you into a unique viewing experience.  Her objective is for the viewer to appreciate not only the aesthetic beauty of the pieces but also the detailed imagery that seems to engulf the Classical Grecian forms. Covered with imagery, the ultimate goal of the show is to require a Gaze to Discover, that is, a relationship formed through a deep gaze, which  leads to higher thought-provoking puzzle solving.

The 12 ceramic vessels in the show make up a word puzzle.  With each pot designated as a single letter through its imagery, the pieces form words. These heavily carved forms are enhanced with the tradition of the double wall.  Pennekamp uses this tradition to create deeper gazing planes.  Dimensionality and depth seem to appear with every shift of glance.   “Gaze to Discover” is as much an art viewing experience, as it is a visual interacting puzzle to be solved.

The exhibition is sponsored by FAU’s department of visual arts and art history in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. For additional information regarding the exhibition, contact the University Galleries at 561-297-2966.
