Lauren Butcher, Environmental Education Coordinator at Grassy Waters Preserve, will present the program “Discover the Everglades in Your Back Yard” on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the West Palm Beach Garden Club meeting. The program will be held at the Mounts Botanical Garden's Clayton E. Hutcheson Agricultural Service Center building, which is in the back of the botanical garden, in the Conference Room. The club gathers at 10 a.m. for complimentary refreshments, and the program begins at 10:30 a.m. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Grassy Waters is a pristine and vital remnant of the greater Everglades ecosystem that also serves as the freshwater supply for the City of West Palm Beach and the Towns of Palm Beach and South Palm Beach. A 23-square-mile mosaic of marshes, cypress swamps and forested hammocks, Grassy Waters is home to a fascinating variety of native plants and wildlife. In her talk, Butcher will illuminate the history and ecology of this remarkable wetland wilderness and explain what gardeners can do to help conserve, protect and enjoy its waters.
