This documentary filmed over three years, follows renowned international artist Vik Muniz as he traveled from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil to the world’s largest garbage dump just outside of Rio de Janeiro. There, he photographed an eclectic band of “catadores” – self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to capture the catadores in their garbage environment to recreate famous portraits. However, his collaboration with these inspiring individuals as they created photographic images of themselves out of garbage, reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives with Muniz’s help.
