Sugar Sand Park Community Center will host a community wide art project in recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday celebration. The holiday is celebrated by the City of Boca Raton with the theme “Building a Beloved Community,” which inspired the creation of the new artistic endeavor.

The public art venture is a two-fold process. For the first part ten local artists have submitted a piece of work on a 12” x 12” canvas, which will be combined to create one large work. The artists are Phyllis Annunziato, Maria Cerra, Janice Cohen, Marian Green, Maggie Jourgensen, Peggy Kuntz, Robert Kuntz, Lola Lichman, Lynn Stender, and John Torres.

A public reception will be held to unveil the new piece on Saturday, January 15 at 11:00 am.  The piece will remain on display through the year.

The second part involves community members of all ages.  On Wednesday, March 16 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm people have a chance to create their own small piece, which will later be incorporated into a larger canvas by our participating artists. The public can work in many different mediums with the help of the artists.

The final community art project will be open on Saturday, March 19 at Explorium Edventure Day, a public event at Sugar Sand Park, and remain on display throughout the year.

The hope of this project is to heighten civic identity and pride, and give voice to artists and patrons. It will also bring to focus the level of talent in local artists, and the significance of the arts in our community
