Central American Modernism: Overlooked and Undervalued
Presentation by Suzanne Snider, Curator, Author & Art Historian
Ms. Snider is the author of upcoming book Central American Modernism to be published by Caps and Bells. Most of the Modernist artists of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama traveled to Europe, Mexico, the US and South America to experience Modernism. They returned and merged what they learned with their own cultures, including indigenous and pre-Columbian. They created unique and spectacular works. Armando Morales, Carlos Merida, Francisco Zuniga are recognized, but there are many more to be introduced. For three years Ms. Snider has been researching the top artists born before 1940. She traveled widely through the region attending events in each country meeting artists, the families of deceased artists, gallerists, historians and museums. The book includes an essay about Modernism in each nation and then 6 of the most interesting or influential artists from each of those nations will be highlighted with biographies and lots of photographs of the works.
Suzanne Snider, curator of the Ford Art Gallery, has been working with Central American artists for 15 years, meeting with many of them in their studios. The artists include: Alejandro Aróstegui, Rodolfo Abularache, Cesar Izquierdo, Elmar Rojas, Armando Morales, Hugo Palma-Ibarra, Marcia Salas, and Benjamin Cañas (through his widow, Dora Cañas).
