Join Dr. Ralph Nurnberger as he examines the Scottish Duo in a special two-part series. Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie are among the most iconic heroes in Scotland, remaining popular and revered figures in Scottish history even though neither ever achieved their objective, namely, to be the monarch in Britain.
Charles Edward Stuart (“Bonnie Prince Charlie”) was Mary Queen of Scots’ great-great-grandson. He spent his life claiming the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland, calling himself “Charles III.” His invasion of England led to his defeat at Culloden, the
last pitched battle ever on British soil. After his overwhelming defeat, Bonnie Prince Charlie hid in the moors of the Highlands of Scotland, always barely ahead of the English forces. Many Highlanders aided him during his escape, and none of them betrayed him for the £30,000 reward. Although his forces were defeated by the British, he remains a “romanticized” hero in Scotland. This lecture takes place 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm and is also available virtually.
