Community Invited to Observe 60th Annual National Day of Prayer

May 3, 2011:  Two public prayer events will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2011, in the City of Delray Beach to observe the 60th Annual National Day of Prayer.

At noon, Delray Beach citizens will gather as they have for more than a decade in front of City Hall, 100 NW 1st Avenue for an interdenominational prayer gathering. The community is invited to join civic and religious leaders as they pray that God will continue to shed His grace on this nation. This year's theme is "A Mighty Fortress is our God".  For more information, please call Sharon Wood at (561) 498-8572

At 6:00 pm, the Delray Beach Interfaith Clergy Association will host the "People of Faith Praying in Peace, Unity and Diversity" prayer service at the Duncan Conference Center, located at 15820 South Military Trail, Delray Beach. Representatives from the Jewish, Christian, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Bahai and Christian Science faiths will offer prayers for the community, the nation and the world. For more information, please call Reverend Richard Lewallen, Chair, National Day of Prayer Committee, at (561) 454-1379.

In 1775, the Continental Congress issued a call to prayer in forming our nation.  The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed by President Harry Truman.  President Ronald Reagan designated the first Thursday in May as the permanent date for this observance in 1988.
