Event Description

Dr. Jay A. Clarke, Rothman Family Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago, investigates the meanings behind the exhibition Clifford Ross: Waves which demonstrate a broad range of media and size. How has this iconic, aquatic theme captivated Ross’s attention and shifted from realism to abstraction and back again over the past 23 years? Clarke uncovers his motivation and considers the art historical precedents for these watery feats from Hokusai to Morris Louis. She touches on how Ross’s shift to computer-generated wave-making has impacted his relationship to the natural world. Additionally, she delves into the artist’s Mount Sopris series to address the artist’s move from sea to land. Finally, Clarke considers the issue of climate change and how it impacted these majestic, powerful, and yet altered views of nature.
