Alessandra Medri, the marine animal stranding coordinator for Palm Beach County’s Environmental Resources Management Department, checks on a pygmy sperm whale found near shore in Delray Beach on Aug. 28. Passersby and Delray Beach lifeguards stayed with and comforted the whale. After being examined by a veterinarian, the whale was found to be in failing health with no chance of recovery. It then was euthanized and transported to the Palm Beach Zoo for a necropsy. According to Dr. Kirt W.
