Meeting time change — The Town Council voted 4-1at its Aug. 11 meeting to move the time of its regular monthly meetings from 2 to 6 p.m.
Vice Mayor Francesca Attardi argued that the town was split between retiree and working-class populations almost evenly, meaning many residents would not be available for the town meetings that have been earlier in the day.
Council member Sandra Beckett, the lone vote against the switch, said 65% of the population of the town is over 65, and 6 p.m. would fall around dinner time for much of the town’s population. She also said that the new time could exclude condo managers and board executives, as the meeting time would fall outside of their normal business days.
The council’s meeting times started out late and have gradually moved to earlier times of day before the new shift. They were initially held at 8 or 8:30 p.m. starting in 1955, moved to 7:30 p.m. in 1970, to 7 p.m. in 2010, to 4 p.m. in 2020, then to 2 p.m. in 2023.
Sea wall markings update — The Town Council approved requiring condominiums facing the ocean to mark their sea walls with their address numbers to make it easier for emergency services to accurately respond to beach emergencies.
