Lantana police are searching for those who vandalized markers for fallen police officers at a memorial near Town Hall on Aug. 14. The spray-painting spree also targeted a historic church.
The lawbreakers defaced the fallen officers’ memorial on Greynolds Circle. The stone monuments at the memorial bear the names of Lt. Alfred Garrison, who died Dec. 1, 2001, and Sgt. Andrew Redding, who died Feb. 12, 1974.
In a Facebook post, Mayor Karen Lythgoe said the incidents were “hurtful to the people in the community.” She said she has lived in the town since 1965, when she was 5, and had never seen anything like this. “Disgusting and shameful don’t quite cover what I think of this,” she said.
Police Chief Sean Scheller said the investigation “remains active/open, and no suspects have been taken into custody.”
The Anglican Catholic church involved was the Church of Holy Guardian Angels on Cardinal Lane. The church, built by Henry Flagler in 1894 and formerly known as the Minerva Chapel, is one of the oldest buildings in Palm Beach County.
