Crews last month finished installing pedestrian-activated crosswalk signals at eight locations along State Road A1A in Highland Beach, closing the book on a three-year effort. The solar-powered lights each feature a diamond shape crosswalk sign with a horizontal light bar below. When activated, the lights flash across the horizontal bar to alert motorists of a pedestrian in or approaching the crosswalk. ‘This is definitely an improvement for crosswalk safety,’ said Highland Beach Police Chief Craig Hartmann. ‘Drivers can see the flashing lights from several hundred feet away so they now have more time to react and stop.’ Tim Stepien/The Coastal Star
