Louder pickleball play coming to Little Club — Members of The Little Club will get to swap their softer, quieter balls and paddles for standard, noisier gear under a pilot program approved by the town.
In 2023, Gulf Stream town commissioners let club members begin play with the quieter equipment after neighbors worried that matches would downgrade their quiet enjoyment of life.
On Oct. 9, Carly Bellis, a Little Club director and chair of its pickleball committee, told commissioners that construction of a new building at the club, growth of clusia hedges and a new sound-blocking fence have offset the need for using restrictive gear.
“We did some sound-level testing and we found honestly that you couldn’t hear the pickleball past even our building up there,” she said.
Commissioners informally decided to allow standard equipment to be used and will review the pilot program results in January.
“We can always go back to it if people complain,” Commissioner Joan Orthwein said.
Water connection with Boynton ‘on schedule’ — Work to rebuild Gulfstream Boulevard and add a new water main to connect Gulf Stream with the drinking water supply of Boynton Beach is moving along.
“The project’s working pretty good. It’s on schedule,” Poonam Kalkat, director of public utilities for Boynton Beach, told Gulf Stream town commissioners on Oct. 9. “We’re thinking by late January or February we should be able to make the final connection, so that’s the goal.”
Once the connection is made, Gulf Stream will end its decades-long arrangement of buying bulk water from Delray Beach, which had told the town it could no longer be its water supplier.
