Florida Atlantic University neuroscientist Laura Fontenas, Ph.D., received a $448,664 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study how the body makes myelin, the protective coating around nerves. The research could shed light on myelin loss in diseases such as multiple sclerosis and how damaged myelin might be repaired.
Fontenas and her team recently found a new type of cell in zebrafish that makes myelin. They will study how these cells work and whether healthy ones could help repair damaged nerves. The grant will also give undergraduate students in South Florida hands-on research experience.
New technique speeds shoulder surgery recovery
Delray Medical Center now offers patients total shoulder replacement with the Inhance Intact tissue-sparing surgical technique, performed by orthopedic shoulder and elbow surgeon Dr. Vani Sabesan.
This technique preserves the subscapularis tendon, a key shoulder tendon, so surgeons don’t have to cut and repair it. As a result, some patients may be able to start moving their shoulder as early as a day after surgery.
Other benefits include faster rehabilitation, low complication rates and potentially shorter hospital stays.
