The Delray Beach City Commission is hitting the brakes on creating an ordinance with safety rules for e-bikes.
At the commissioners’ meeting on July 14, they agreed to wait until Palm Beach County passes its own ordinance addressing e-bike safety before they move forward with creating their own. Earlier this year, Florida lawmakers passed a bill that created strict regulations for e-bikes statewide. Gov. Ron DeSantis later vetoed the approved legislation.
Local communities are now considering whether to create their own rules to address safety issues with the growing mode of transportation.
“If the commission wants to go further, we can either draft our own ordinance … or just wait for the county to adopt theirs,” City Attorney Lynn Gelin said.
Most on the commission wanted to wait until county commissioners pass a countywide ordinance. They believe county rules would create uniformity between different communities and improve enforcement.
“I personally think we would be best suited to be in alignment with our neighbors,” Commissioner Tom Markert said.
County commissioners are expected to consider an ordinance on e-bike safety in August.
