Holiday traffic in Delray Beach received a break for this Fourth of July thanks to the George Bush Boulevard bridge repair project finishing more than two weeks ahead of schedule.
The bridge, which has been closed for repairs since June 1, reopened to traffic at about 3:30 p.m. July 2, according to a post on Palm Beach County’s Engineering and Public Works Facebook page. The bridge hadn’t been expected to reopen until July 20.
The opening will provide holiday relief to the city’s island residents. Not only was the George Bush Boulevard bridge going to be closed, but the Atlantic Avenue Bridge is also set to shut down between noon and 11 p.m. July 4 for holiday festivities.
Atlantic Avenue will be closed between the bridge and State Road A1A during that time, as will traffic north and south of Atlantic on A1A.
The George Bush Boulevard bridge opening will help island traffic north of the downtown on the Fourth, providing another Intracoastal Waterway crossing just a short ways north of Atlantic. Previously, drivers north of downtown would have had to go to Woolbright Road to cross.
