A private club is coming to downtown Boca Raton.
The City Council, sitting as the Community Redevelopment Agency board, unanimously approved The Sanborn on Oct. 13 as supporters wearing navy and white T-shirts applauded.
Only two residents spoke against the project, saying that the downtown already is overbuilt.
The eight-story project, with two levels of valet parking underground, will be located at the intersection of Northeast First Avenue and East Boca Raton Road — immediately east of Sanborn Square and north of The Aletto office and restaurant development that is now under construction. It will replace a two-story retail and office building that had been the previous home of Boca Beach Chabad.
The invitation-only club will feature a restaurant, supper club, rooftop bar and grill and speakeasy. Other amenities will include a rooftop pool with private cabanas, library, private dining rooms, cigar lounge, spa and fitness club, a card room and another bar.
The building is designed by HDA Architects of Boca Raton.
The developers are Steven Newman of Hollywood and Scott Kerner of Boca Raton’s Golden Harbour neighborhood, who bought the 0.3-acre property in March for $10 million, the South Florida Business Journal reported.
“It’s a club for people who live here,” Newman said in a release. “You’ll walk in, someone will know your name and there will always be something you haven’t found yet.”
