When I was a kid in Miami Beach, the flowing water between Miami Beach and Miami was referred to as the Spanish River, and the road along the ocean was Ocean Drive.
Somehow over the years our ears have become tuned to the Intracoastal Waterway and A1A — so named by the bureaucrats and adopted by sign makers, newspapers and real estate people.
When these features pass through our cities, we can call them anything we want, so why don’t we go back to the nicer sounding names?
And while we’re at it, can we discard northbound Federal Highway and southbound Federal Highway, too? They could be better named for someone who is prominent because of significant contributions to our village. Why not?
