In his letter to the editor last month, Earl Jones wrote that bicyclists should ride in bike lanes where bike lanes are provided, and that police departments should enforce the 3-foot minimum passing distance.
The problem is that the majority of motorists are unfamiliar with the new 3-foot passing clearance law because of the absence of road signs. Many State Road A1A drivers are tourists who are unfamiliar with this new state law. In fact, few Florida drivers are aware of this law, either. SAFE has asked the Florida Department of Transportation to erect road signs educating drivers; however, FDOT has turned a deaf ear to SAFE’s request.
Until the driving public has been educated, it would be unfair to fine motorists for disobeying a law that hasn’t been promulgated.
