(Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) – This week, the Devonshire at PGA National retirement community in Palm Beach Gardens will officially introduce a new smoke-free program for employees of the community. The initiation of this program coincides with the Great American Smokeout, promoted by the American Cancer Society, and reinforces a focus on health and wellness for the staff at the Devonshire.
According to the American Cancer Society, the Great American Smokeout is meant to encourage smokers “to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.” They cite that while tobacco use is still the largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S, about 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, more than 13 million smoke cigars, and over 2 million smoke tobacco in pipes.
The new program at Devonshire aims to eliminate the use of lighted tobacco products on the campus by employees, which includes visiting contractors. The community strongly promotes a continued emphasis on improving the health and wellness of its employees. One of the health initiatives at Devonshire this year involved sponsorship of and the participation by staff in the PGA Heart Health Weekly Walk, coordinated by PGA National Resort and Spa. Devonshire’s participation helped PGA National earn the Fit-Friendly Worksites Gold Award recognition given by the American Heart Association.
“It is our goal to make every effort to encourage employees to make healthier lifestyle decisions,” said Shelli Giardino, Director of Human Resources at Devonshire. “We do provide programs to help with smoking cessation, along with a whole host of opportunities to make healthier choices. This is just one more step toward that goal.”
