DELRAY BEACH LANDMARK – MERCER WENZEL DEPARTMENT STORE ON ATLANTIC AVENUE TO CLOSE
DELRAY BEACH, FL - Mercer Wenzel announces its department store will be closing by the end of November. Mercer Wenzel, located in the heart of historic downtown Delray Beach, has sold Men’s, Ladies’ and Children’s Clothing, Linens and Gifts since 1958.
“The time was right for my retirement and for the building to begin the next chapter of its long life. This is a sentimental time for our family. It truly is the end of a great shopping tradition in Delray Beach,” said Bruce Wenzel, founder. Mercer Wenzel has offered personal service in a small department store environment, reminiscent of stores from years ago. In a mass market world, Mercer Wenzel quietly met the needs of its customers one at a time.
Mr. Wenzel sold swimsuits for Catalina in the Midwest and was transferred to South Florida in the 1950s. At that time, the Zuckerman family operated a department store at the 401 East Atlantic Avenue location, which was one of Wenzel’s many customers. In 1958 the Zuckermans convinced Wenzel to buy their business (which he did with SL Mercer, his partner for a decade). Since then Wenzel has worked at the store 6 days a week and has been a dedicated supporter of the Community Chest, United Way, Rotary and other local organizations.
“The entire Wenzel family is grateful to our loyal customers and staff. We will cherish the 54 years of memories as part of the Delray Beach community,” says Bruce Wenzel.
