This letter is to explain my comment, which was accurately reported in your October 2009 issue, regarding finalizing town budgets.
The mention of an “increase of about 7 percent” referred to the $5.50 per $1,000 assessed value tax rate the Town Commission was working with at the beginning of the final budget meeting. The actual final rate of $5.40 is almost a 5 percent increase over the previous year’s tax rate of $5.15. I apologize to your readers for any confusion.
I also want to applaud the work of the Ocean Ridge town commissioners and staff for a good job in achieving a reasonable tax rate. Although it is an increase, it is far less than the rollback rate of $5.90 (which would be an increase of 15 percent.)
